Professor Shamira Gelbman presented her research entitled “Revisiting the Determinants of Social Movement Success: The Case of the Afrikaner Nationalist Movement” at the Department Brown Bag seminar on Oct. 12 Monday. The research traces the development of the Afrikaner nationalist movement from the 1930s through its 1948 electoral victory. It argues that for a social movement to take advantage of emergent opportunities for the advancement of its goals, it must have already engaged in substantial resource mobilization. Professor Gelbman’s presentation is the first brownbag event of Fall 2009.
