Martin Luther King III Calls for Political Engagement

Martin Luther King III called upon the students of Illinois State University to be engaged in politics so that the voices of the younger generation are heard. Speaking to the students of the Department of Politics and Government on Friday 22 January, King said that the students should strive to promote a broader range of human rights and not necessarily just racial equality. “I don’t think we do enough community service and helping each other out,” King said. “I think that is what my father would be promoting if he were alive today.” Martin Luther King, the oldest son of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, was visiting the campus to deliver the keynote lecture at ISU's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner. Before the dinner event, he delivered a lecture to the students organized by the Department of Politics and Government. Introducing the speaker, the Chair of the Department, Professor Ali Riaz said that Martin Luther King III is not only a civil rights activist and a politician of the United States; he is known internationally as an inspiring speaker who draws our attention to the importance of non-violence in global conflict resolution.  King said the fact that America elected a black president doesn’t mean that his father’s work for civil rights is complete.
