Students and Professors Return From Washington D.C. Civic Engagement Tour

From July 12 to the 17th, Dr. Robert C. Bradley, Professor Erik Rankin, and eleven undergraduate students stayed on the campus of George Washington University as part of the ISU D.C. Civic Engagement Study Tour. A highlight of the tour was the group attending the Sotomayor confirmation hearings in the Hart Senate Office Building. The group was able to hear Judge Sotomayor questioned by Senators Feingold and Kyl. Other features of the tour included attending a joint presentation by Illinois Senators Durbin and Burris, going on a Capitol Tour jointly ran by Illinois Representatives Halvorson and Johnson’s staff, visiting one of the most politically powerful law firms in D.C., touring the Newseum, meeting directly with Representative Halvorson, hearing from nationally renown political campaign strategists and fundraisers, and attending a Cubs-Nationals game with ISU alumni from the D.C. area. The group also visited Arlington Cemetery and went on an evening tour of the monuments conducted by the National Park Service.

Every student, including those who had been to D.C. multiple times, commented quite favorably about the unique and invaluable learning opportunities that were provided on the tour. The tour will be offered again in the summer of 2010 in the midst of what is shaping up to be a very interesting set of congressional races. For more information on the 2010 D.C. Study Tour contact Dr. Bradley at 438-8944 or rbradley@ilstu.edu.
