Metropolitan Policy Internships

The METROPOLITAN POLICY program offers part-time and full-time internship opportunities throughout the year, typically for the duration of a school semester. The intern's main responsibility is to provide research and some administrative assistance for the program's current projects. Interns will have the opportunity to participate in substantive and independent research in several diverse areas of urban policy, including but not limited to: market and demographic trends, metropolitan growth and development trends, planning and land use issues, transportation, economic development, neighborhood markets, and working family policies.

The position is mostly suited for junior and senior undergraduates majoring in economics, planning, political science, social sciences (particularly urban policy), and business. Computer skills preferred are ArcView GIS, Excel, SAS, and strong quantitative background. Anyone interested in urban issues is strongly encouraged to apply. Interns are expected to devote a minimum of 20 hours per week during the school year, but schedules are flexible. Resumes are kept on file for a six-month period and will be submitted for consideration each time a position becomes available. All positions are unpaid.

World Policy Institute

The Internship Program at the World Policy Institute offers advanced undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to gain practical experience in policy research and advocacy on international issues by assisting with the production of the World Policy Journal, conducting research for the Institute's senior fellows, and assisting with a variety of tasks involved in the operations of a respected center for innovative policy leadership.

Past interns have gone on to staff positions in government, non-profit, and business organizations including Independent Diplomat, Demos: A Network for Ideas and Action, Sightsavers International, WaterAid America, Conservation International, Millennium Partners, Worldwatch Institute, the World Policy Institute, and many others. Crain's New York Business (June 21, 2006) has cited WPI as one of the most sought after internships for ambitious students and recent graduates.

Internship Duties vary but may include the following:
Assist Senior Fellows with research
Assist in the management of fundraising efforts and events
Support media outreach
Update the website
Newsletter writing and production
Assist with general office operations
Attend relevant events and report on them
Assist the Editors of World Policy Journal
Liaise with partner institution
Update contact and mailing lists
Event coordination and staffing


QUALIFICATIONS
Strong writing, research and computer skills are essential; web experience and proficiency in Microsoft Excel will be given priority. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with strong interpersonal skills who is well organized, attentive to detail, and willing to participate in a variety of tasks as needed. A keen interest in the Institute’s mission and body of work, as well as an awareness of current events, is essential.
COMPENSATION
Internships are unpaid; however, course credit is available and hours are flexible.

INTERNSHIP TERMS AND DEADLINES:
 Fall semester internships; applications are due August 15;
 Spring semester internships; applications are accepted November 15 through December 15;
 Summer internships; applications are accepted February 28-March 28.
