Careers in Politics and Government

What types of careers are possible with a political science degree?

One of the best answers to this question is, based on the skills our students develop and in the career paths they've actually taken, is "Almost anything."

As is the case with almost every other liberal arts major, training in political science is first and foremost designed to give you skills that you can use in almost any job. We focus on encouraging our students to think critically, to be aware of the world around them, and to think about and develop their own views and opinions on political, economic and social issues. This means that there is no one occupation in which most of our graduates can be found, but that they achieve success on a wide variety of fronts. Our students have used these skills to launch a wide variety of careers in government and in the private sector, while some further their studies in law school, Master's and PhD programs of study.

Our political science majors can also choose, if they wish, to concentrate on specific areas in public service, global studies, etc. which will allow them to begin to develop more specialized areas of knowledge.

The following list includes some (not all!) of the careers which our graduates are presently pursuing or have pursued in the past.
